Day and Fly V top Tour de Beauce

Fly V Australia's Ben Day claimed his second Tour de Beauce title after the 130-kilometre final stage held in Saint Georges, Quebec.

The stage was won by Hector Gonzalez Baeza (Heraklio-Murcia) in a time of 3hr 22min 42sec, followed 16 seconds later by Jackson Stewart (BMC) and Will Routley (Team Canada).

An early eight-rider breakaway had built a lead of up to two minutes and 50 seconds at 100 kilometres before being caught, with the Spaniard Baeza pulling away inside the final two laps of Saint-Georges to finish solo.

Day took the race lead following the fourth stage time-trial and further solidified his hold on the yellow jersey with a 5th placing at the end of the fifth stage street circuit held in the Old City of Quebec.

Day finished ahead of teammate and fellow Queenslander Darren Rolfe on the final general classification, with Dutchman Marc De Maar (Unitedhealthcare) third overall.

His performance saw him add the white points jersey to his collection, while his Fly V Australia squad took out the team award.

Day and his wife French Canadian wife Isabelle were married last winter in the Beauce and the rider was thrilled to claim the win as a 'hometown' victory.

“This victory means more to me than the one in 2007”, he said. “Primarily because it took place in front of my wife and her family, but also because I had put a lot of pressure on myself following my more or less successful performance of last year,” he said.

“I am receiving the honours but I owe my success to the whole team. The guys worked very hard. I am really happy for Darren Rolfe who finished second in the overall standings, his best performance in his career, and it would have been very nice if Charles (Dionne) could have won a stage here, in front of his family.

"Instead, he sacrificed himself so I could keep the yellow jersey. I can’t thank my team enough.”
